World of Warcraft
From GotFrag eSports Wiki
World of Warcraft (commonly abbreviated as WoW) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game created by Blizzard Entertainment.
Competitive Play
Until the Burning Crusade expansion pack, World of Warcraft was largely ignored by competitive e-sports. However, with the addition of arenas in the Burning Crusade expansion, some leagues began to notice World of Warcraft as a game which had competitive potential. The World Series of Video Games (WSVG) annouced that World of Warcraft would be one of the games featured in their 2007 season. However, the WSVG was later cancelled mid-season. The appearance of WoW into the WSVG did lure a tremendous amount of viewership, to the point of it even being broadcast as part of CBS sports. Its no doubt that wow is something of an iconic sensation in our current age.
World of Warcraft is a great alternative to those who don't like twitch based games like Counter-Strike, the Quake series and Starcraft. World of Warcraft requires a great deal of time to truly build ones character to a competitive level. Many criticize it citing that the global cooldown (a mechanism to limit the pace at which certain instant cast abilities are paced so that damage doesn't scale to out of control levels) limits the amount of skill involved. Such statements are generally not regarded as truly understanding the mechanics of the game. It is not a button mash fest, and the GCD is vital to the games function. Its worth further noting, that just about every MMO PvP or not out there has featured a similar variation on this mechanic. Except for guild wars, which has many short cast spells each on their own cooldown meaning you cant spam more than 1 spell at a time but the APM(Actions Per Minute) required is significantly higher (see 'prot monk' and 'infuse monk'.)
