The TF2.Gather.US Network
The TF2.Gather.US network is a competitive pickup network for the popular Steam game, Team Fortress 2. Founded on the GameSurge IRC network by Shameless, the original #TF2Pickup channel was merged with the gather-network several months ago, hence acquiring the #TF2.Gather.US channel name. What was once a small channel, hosting infrequent TF2 pickup games, has evolved into a thriving scene for both leisure players and the most competitive in the game alike. In this article you will find our rules and regulations governing these pickup games; a list of available commands for the PickupBot; and additional information to help make your TF2Pug experience the best possible.
Thanks for joining us, and please enjoy your stay!

- 6v6 games are NOT played using the European class restrictions.
- All games are played with the CEVO/ESEA regulation configurations.
- NOTE: Game-play variants may change based on the competitive leagues in which the Gather-Network models to maintain its competitive appeal.
TF2Pug Rules
(These are only guidelines, admins can alter these and change ban times at their own discretion)
- Breaking a rule will result in a ban
- Players are expected to connect to the server and Ventrilo promptly and stay in both the server and Vent. for the entire duration of the pug.
- Players ARE allowed to request a replacement should they need to leave, but they MUST wait in the server until the replacement has joined the team. Once the replacement is in and playing, the player is able to leave the PUG. Do NOT expect to be able to leave the PUG and have a replacement found for you, doing so will result in a ban.
- Admin powers are to be used properly, and not to disrupt the pug in progress. Kicking/Banning players for the server/Vent with no reason will not be tolerated.
- Players being disruptive during the pug (eg. being rude to other players, not adhering to class restrictions) will be warned and then if said player ignores the warning and continues to be disruptive, he or she will be banned.
- Players who sign up for the PUG in the IRC channel and do not join the server will be banned.
- Spamming of any sort, not only limited to !add, will result in automatic ban of 1 (one) hour. Players who continue to spam after returning from their 1 (one) hour ban will be dealt a lengthier ban.
- Any generic player using the /notice command in IRC will be banned for 1 (one) hour. The /notice command is ONLY for admins and should never be spammed! Admins spamming the /notice command will be reprimanded and given a warning, followed by a removal of their admin privileges if it happens again.
- First come first serve to each class. If someone is already playing a class, and the class limits have been reached on that class, it's theirs. Stacking a class, in order to try get a position will not be tolerated and will result in a ban. However, it is common courtesy to share ladies and gentlemen, if you are not performing as well on a popular class and you know someone else wants to play it, allow them to do so.
- Being abusive (which includes, but is not limited to, racism/sexism/rude or other distasteful comments) or disruptive, ruining the game for other players or being a downright idiot will result in a ban. This includes both Ventrilo harassment and the use of in-game chat.
- Players may join the pug server if they're not in the pug. However, if you wish to spectate the pug, make sure that is all that occurs. If a player who added to the pug does not show up, use the !sub command in the IRC channel, or simply contact the games admin over Ventrilo to see if a substitute is needed. DO NOT simply join a pug team in the absence of a player unless specifically told too by an admin.
- Spamming +duck (script or manually) in order to exploit hit boxes is not tolerated. Doing so will result in a ban.
- Any other forms of scripting that exploits your hit boxes/movement to give you an advantage will not be tolerated, this includes the sniper shoot/jump/crouch script. And if caught will result in a ban.
- The scout unlock, Sandman, is banned from use to follow suite in competitive play. The gather community will re-evaluate its impact on competitive play at the same rate other leagues do.
- The sixth person to join each team has the responsibility of going medic, unless of course someone else already has selected that class.
- We expect players to follow these game play rules, and to behave properly during the pug.
(These are only 'guidelines', admins can alter these and change ban times at their own discretion)
NOTE: Despite what you may think, if you're being stupid and ignoring the rules, you will be banned. Complaining will get you no where, suck it up and enjoy your ban.
TF2Pug Bans And What Not To Do
- All ban times may vary and the length of a ban can be viewed in your GameSurge status window, or you can ask an admin to tell you the length of your ban. ANY additional offense increases the ban time for each user. Someone who is banned for not joining the pug, and cops a 1 day ban, will receive a 2 day ban next time for any other offense.
- Players will not be informed automatically of their current ban time. If you get banned, deal with it.
- If players believe they have been banned unreasonably, please contact one of the administrators.
TF2.Gather.US Staff
Should you need further assistance, don't hesitate to contact any of the following people:
- Owner: maxf
- Managers: m0, ducom, brownymaster
- Perm. Admins: Cartz, Grillz, Dinan, Carnage, r3ver3nd, Diddy, Waar, Attean, Polar
Note that this list is quite outdated. Asking in the channel for help is your best bet.
HAVE FUN PUGGING!
NOTE: Credit to the ipgn.tf2 network for compiling many of these rules for their own pickup network.
tf2.gather.us Beginner's guide
This is a beginner's guide to the #tf2.gather.us channel and how to try out pugging competitively. If you find any errors, please PM brownymaster on gamesurge.net. This will basically show you how to use IRC, use Ventrilo, and other things.
IRC
First you need an IRC client to get to the gather network. Download any IRC client. I'd recommend mIRC, the most popular IRC client. You can get it from [1]. Once you have it downloaded, install it and open it. In the top menu bar, click File->Select Server. It'll give you a popup with different IRC networks. Find the Gamesurge folder in the list and double click it. Then double click the random server option (not the EU server, although it'd makes little difference, your latency will be bad) and hit ok. Then press connect, and you'll be connected to the gamesurge.net network. Now, type /join #tf2.gather.us and you'll be inside the gather channel. *Note* I'm not going over gamesurge authing in this tutorial; however, it is highly suggested you do so.
Ventrillo
This is divided into connecting to vent and setting a bind to talk.
Connecting
In order to play in a pug, you will need Ventrilo. You can download it from [2]. Install it and open it up. Click the -> next to the dropdown for Username. Create a username for yourself. Next, click the -> next to server. In the message box, click the new button, and for Hostname put vent20.gameservers.com. For Port Number, put 4273. For Password, put tf2gather. Then press OK and click connect. You should then have joined the gather vent. This is how all communication will be done, not ingame.
Setting up talk key
Click on setup. In the window that opens, make sure Enable Outgoing Connections, Use Push To Talk Hotkey, and User Direct Input is checked. In the box right of Hotkey (located to the middle left), click it and press what key you want to be your talking hotkey. Make sure it's not the same as your ingame voice or you'll be talking in both vent and ingame, which will annoy just about anybody. I suggest unbinding your ingame voice command if you want to use the same key. After that, try talking. You might need to adjust your Inbound and Outbound volumes in the setup menu, so try to get someone to help you figure out if you're too loud or soft. After that you should be set.
When a game starts
When a game starts (explained later) you need to join the channel of your team and server. This is done by double clicking the Team A or Team B subchannel of the server. The TF2 Gather Bot will send you the server number and which team you're on; join that.
Joining a pug
While in the gather channel, when you see the topic is changed to Gather Started Admin: <admin>... etc, a game has been started. Type !add to join the gather. When 12 people have added, the bot will randomly assign those 12 players to a team. If you can't make it and need to go before the gather has started, type !remove to get out. After the game has started, you will need to ask an admin to get a sub. Join the vent channel and open up TF2. To connect to a server, press the ` key (~ with shift) to open up console. If you don't have console enabled, go to options and keyboard in TF2 and enable console. In vent, copy the server comment by right clicking the server the pug is on, selecting Misc., and then clicking copy comment. Back in TF2, while console's open paste (Ctrl + V) and press enter. You should be joining the server. Last one in is medic, so please beginners avoid being last in or people will rage at you if you aren't decent. Anyways, once in game, pick a class. It's preferred you stick to scout, soldier, demo, or medic, unless it's a map like gravelpit where you can run a sniper engineer or spy. Please do not mess around, as it's really not fun to play with a teammate that is not helping the team. Listen to the older players, and try to get good feedback and help from them. Not all of them are open, so please ignore them. That's all I really have to say for now, I hope you enjoy your gathers, but be warned, you'll probably not do so good the first few times. If you can stick in and eventually get a better sense of how much teamwork matters in competitive style play, you'll get to enjoy the games more. Please read the rules, they are important.
