History
2000
Founded on June 2nd, 2000 [1], Team TEC TEC was originally formed as a group of friends that went to high school together at West High School in Bakersfield, California. TEC was not always known as TEC, before taking up that tag the clan was known as -The Elite-, but once entering real leagues the team would decide that name was too "newbie" for a clan and ended up changing it to The Elite Clan, which later just ended up as "TEC".
The team was formed with the intent to take their gaming skill to another level in the OGL League[2] which was the premier league in these days.
The founded roster contained two members that would eventually play the majority of TEC matches those were Matt "Gouki" Gilbert and Jonathan "LiLMonkeY" Gilbert. Although at this time, Jonathan "LiLMonkeY" Gilbert was not considered as a very good player at this time and got limited play time basically being a back-up.
The team would eventually branch out into other leagues such as Stronger Than All (STA) [3] as well as Domain of Games[4] (which would later become CAL). Through out the end of the year -The Elite- would play only 25 matches but ended up going 18-7 total.
The Founding Roster was:
Matt "Gouki" Gilbert
Jonathan "LiLMonkey" Gilbert
Andrew "CS187" Epstein
Brett "BlueMeanie" Bond
Jacob "Cannibal Ekleptor" Hale
Henry "Ryu" Rogel
Erik "Chaos Child" Erreca
Derek "defx" Roberson
Josh "Frost" Lowrey
Most of the members were of the Graduating Class of 2000 at West High School in Bakersfield, CA, except for Jonathan Gilbert who was only a Freshman at this time.
2001
This year would be a break out year for the team seeing as they would branch out from the local community and recruit players from the internet that they did not know in real life. They recruited people such as: "Murphys", "Kashue", "Emerica", "nIcEguY", "DiNo", "Lethal", "|KrZe", "d3c3p'|'|k0n", "Xist", "Enforcer", "AfterBurn", "CyRaX", "DrAgOn", "GermanTrout", "LeadSoup?", "SKVFX", "CyberBob", "port", "W1ck3d", "Akilla", "Stormshadow", "InFr@-Red", "White Chocolate", "MaximLuva", "Anarchy", "Bulletproof", "kid_c@pri", "Tech", "P!NOY!ZM", "Chico", "Seizmic", "ChrisFX", all of which played minor roles in this stage of the team. However early in 2001 two players that would make a huge impact on the team was:
Tony would become the in game caller for TEC for awhile and RemyXO would become a member that stayed for awhile as well as attending TEC first Major LAN Tournament.
2emyX0" Lamberts
Jay "TonyStarks" Choi
One of the first defining matches of the team was one that took place February 27th, 2001 versus [CK3] which was regarded as the best clan of this time. Although TEC lost this match 14-20, it was said that they were the only team to ever win half a map versus this team in their entire existence winning 9-8 on the Terrorist side of de_prodigy [5].
Around March of 2001, a lot of changes would take place long time friend of the team Jimmy "Jfogle" Koller would join the team as an honorary member and long time back-up that casually played. Also Johnny "boms" Quach would join the team for a brief period of time after leaving [W.E.W] which was the #1 ranked team in the West strongly considered rivals to [CK3]. Another important player would also join the team at this time Mike "Peld" Choley who was long time friends and neighbors with |2emyX0 would join TEC after the demise of [W.E.W] a team he was a large part of.
Jimmy "jfogle" Koller
Johnny "Boms" Quach
Mike "peldpuppy" Choley
Also around March of 2001, founding member Jonathan "LiLMonkeY" Gilbert would depart the team because he did not feel he got the playing time he deserved. LiLMonkeY would go onto play with such teams as [Khan], EoM|-, and supreme eXcellence(sX) which aslo had member Robert "Ph0bius" Irey.
During the Summer of 2001 TEC would become an powerful team to compete against and won the majority of its match-ups even versus top ranked teams, this would continue until around September 2001. A week before the deadly attacks of 9/11, the Gilbert family would re-locate from Bakersfield, CA to Spring, Texas. This meant their leader Matt "Gouki" Gilbert would be with out internet for a few months, during this time from 9/2001 to 10/2001 the team would go through lots of problems and would be on the verge of being disbanded. Matt "Gouki" Gilbert even declared the team Inactive for a period of one month as it recuperated and tried to figure things out [6].
2002
In 2002 TEC would make its resurgence and continue to rebuild, during this time Gouki had cut the roster down to a smaller size no longer having 10-15 active members fighting for playing time instead having around 8-9 active members which consisted of: Gouki, CS187, TonyStarks, peld, DiNo, |2emyXO, BulletProof, Stormshadow, Seizmic and Wicked.
TEC would join CAL in December 2001 and be placed in the Open division, after winning one match by the score of 21-3 they were bumped up to the Main Division. In February of 2002 they would spend the whole month in the Main Division and go undefeated with a record of 6-0. TEC would then be moved up to the premier league of CAL into the Invite Division, and ended up going 7-5 in a partial season [7].
During March of 2002 TEC would part ways with members "Stormshadow" and "Kashue" also in game leader Jay "TonyStarks" Choi would leave the team with this message:
[TonyStarks] its taking over my life again and im becoming a hermit [TonyStarks] its time i rejoin society lol
This left TEC with a slot open for a starter, and during a scrim of secrecy members Mike "peld" Choley and Remy "|2emyXO" snuck Jonathan "elude" Gilbert into a try out using another handle. Jonathan had tried to rejoin TEC many times before this since departing the year prior, but long time member Jay "TonyStarks" Choi would not allow it, and Matt "Gouki" Gilbert did not think his brother was skilled enough to play with TEC. During the tryout Gouki was impressed with the ringer’s abilities and after the practice the secret was let out and "Gouki" allowed "elude" to rejoin the team just in time for the team to compete in CAL-Invite.
The starters as of April/2002 were:
Matt "Gouki" Gilbert
Jonathan "elude" Gilbert
Andrew "CS187" Epstein
Mike "peld" Choley
Remy "RemyXO" Lamberts
Greg "Seizmic" Garofalo
This lineup would go onto play in CAL Invite Season 5, and would improve on last season going 9-5 but not good enough to make the playoffs. But this would set the team up for its first LAN tournament. After watching CPL Winter 2001 online TEC was driven to attend one of these events after the legendary match of X3 versus NiP. Until this tournament TEC did not know these kind of events took place, and they were set on going to Summer 2002 CPL.
At the Summer CPL 2002 Qualifier in Pheonix, AZ, Gouki decided to leave elude at home taking the above lineup. There they would ultimately lose to The Speakeasy Offensive (tso) which featured Dave "moto" Geffon, TEC would place 2nd at this event but still planned on going to CPL.
Prior to the event long time member CS187 told Gouki he would quit his job to attend the event, but this was not acceptable to Gouki who did not allow him to go, this caused problems between the two which ultimately meant Drew "CS187" Epstein would leave the team in his place he was replaced by a long time friend of the team Matt "wake" Daily who would attend Summer CPL 2002 because Greg "Seizmic" Garofalo could not attend.
The lineup for Summer CPL 2002 was:
Matt "Gouki" Gilbert
Jonathan "elude" Gilbert
Mike "peld" Choley
Remy "RemyXO" Lamberts
Matt "w4ke" Daily
TEC arrived at Summer CPL 2002 but did not bring their own computers, which they found to be a huge disadvantage seeing almost every team there had their own and was practicing, fortunately for them Intel had set up 10 computers outside the tournament area where they allowed teams to scrimmage versus each other on. TEC got in line to play on these computers in a scrimmage versus Spacebar and while setting up someone from the crowd of 30 or so sitting behind them mumbled under his breath "this is going to be a rape" later on Jonathan "elude" Gilbert would discover to be none other than Justin "sunman" Summy. This comment fueled elude and what people thought to be a one sided match in favor of the European team was not, TEC held close with Spacebar and narrowly lose the match 10-13 on de_nuke. Spacebar would go onto place favorably in this tournament. TEC on the other hand would not.
In a cruel twist of fate TEC would be matched up against another CAL-Invite team in the Single Elimination event, TEC would be seeded 48th where as their opponents Simply Wicked were seeded 21st despite both teams having similar records online in CAL. TEC was also the lowest seeded invite team despite having one of the better records. With the little practice leading up to the match TEC would ultimately lose to sW|- by the score of 10-13 and this would end TEC's tournament seeing as this was in the single elimination round.
After the disappointment of Summer CPL the online play soon fell as well, TEC's members would lose interest and desire to play and as a result "Seizmic", "|2emyXO", "Peld", "w4ke" and "CS187" would all depart from the team this lead Gouki to make a difficult decision and merge with another team at the time called "mod.v"[8]
As a result the following members joined TEC:
Dan "ZeUs" Tedor
Chris "cYb" Tedor
Dan "moxley" Moxley
John "Malcolm" Malcolm
Cyr "cYr" Turcato
Omar "beekz" Razek
Jordan "spaz" Lida
Scott "mrscotter" Donovan
This lineup was considered Phase 3 of TEC, and after starting off the CAL Invite Season 6 with a 0-2 start, this lineup would propel it to a 12-4 finish. Then losing in the first round of playoffs to Riotsquad by a score of 10-13.
Shortly after merging with mod.v TEC picked up one of the most infamous players in the history of the game David "Funk" Funk and his friend who was local and well known David "Jones" Jones since they were local with the Gilberts in Houston, Texas. With this these 10 starters TEC was able to attend two LANs on the same weekend. The Houston team consisting of "elude", "Gouki", "Funk, and "jones" with Matt "warden" Dickens attended the Toes Gaming Cafe LAN in Houston, Texas placing 2nd behind Texas team Forsaken. Where as the members from Illinois attended an IConnectZone LAN and placed first.
TEC was long considered "cheaters" behind great play from "Elude" and "Moxley" online, they wanted to get as much LAN time playing together as possible and decided to attend the Lethal-Gamers Pre CPL tournament in December of 2002. TEC proved everyone wrong and preformed solidly in the tournament, only losing to one team: esu.sweden, they lost to them three times by the scores of 9-13, 10-13, and 4-13 in the Loser Bracket Finals, TEC would place 3rd and beat one of the tournament favorites: Rival.
TEC attended CPL Winter 2002 with the following lineup:
Matt "Gouki" Gilbert
Jonathan "elude" Gilbert
Dan "ZeUs" Tedor
Dan "moxley" Moxley
Omar "beekz" Razek
Jordan "spaz" Lida
David "Funk" Funk
David "Jones" Jones
Unfortunately "cYb" and "Malcolm" were unable to attend, at the event "ZeUs" decided to sit himself so others could play even though later on this would be a costly mistake, as well as "spaz" who didn’t play. After losing the first round match in the Upper Bracket to Team9 from Sweden, an internal dispute began within the team and after a heated argument over mouse skates on his mouse, David "Funk" Funk left the tournament and went home early before TEC was even eliminated. This left TEC with 5 starters and plenty of backups, they would go onto win 3 straight matches in the loser bracket ultimately losing to [W.E.W] behind solid play from Mikey "method" So. TEC placed 9-12th, behind solid play from "Gouki", "elude", and "Jones", much higher than anyone expected especially themselves.
2003
Early on in 2003 TEC decided it would need to add more firepower to the lineup if it wanted to compete, after being inactive for awhile TEC was able to pull Erik "da_bears" Stromberg out of inactivity to play with the team, this would be the start of one of the best gaming teams North America had ever seen.
This recruitment lead to the recruitment to an onslaught of new players as older ones were phased out, because of "da_bears" recruitment TEC ended up recruiting members of the deceased [Riot-Squad] such as Ash "icesalmon" Mudaly, Alex "Jaden" Moore, Steve "grasle" Grasle, and Laurent "glostik" Genin-Satoh as their manager. This would become a star studed lineup in which they used a 6-man rotation between "Gouki", "elude", "icesalmon", "Jaden", "da_bears" and "Grasle". The team did not gel at first but because of their crazy aim, and funny in game com's from demos they became extremely popular once Gotfrag.com started up.
The first LAN they attended together was LanTactics in Chicago, IL. The LAN was poorly ran, but despite these problems TEC was able to win its first 4 matches, but in the last Group Play match they were upset by a then unknown team named The Stomping Grounds which cast many doubts about this team. Once bracket play started they won their first two matches’ one of which over a very strong Gamers-X team which featured Mikey "method" so. In the Winner Bracket Finals they faced team zEx which had players such as "Shaguar" on it, TEC would lose this match 2-13 and drop down and lose their next one to Gamers-X by a score of 11-13 sending them home placing 3rd.
After the tournament there were many disagreements between the leadership and member Steve "Grasle" Grasle, which led to him parting ways with the team leaving TEC with a 5 man roster. After this TEC would go onto some of the best CS in the history of the team. Starting after LanTactics the team went on a tear going 39-8-1 during online play and on LAN. During that time they won Lethal Gamers of March 2003 beating a pug that consisted of members from 3D. This all led up to the ultimate event a showdown in Texas... Killer LAN.
Killer LAN was hosted in Dallas, Texas and consisted a lot of the top teams around the nation which included e7, 3D, TEC, Gamers-X and GSX. Everyone shrugged this event off as an easy win for Team 3D, a team that prior to this competition, had never lost to an American team on LAN only online. This would all change as TEC would play some of the most spectacular play it had ever seen fueled behind the great play of Jonathan "elude" Gilbert. TEC met 3D in the Winners Bracket Finals which would be on de_inferno, after getting off to a great start TEC continued to roll 3D and won the match easily by a score of 13-4, being the first American team every to beat them. After that they would go on to narrowly defeat them in the finals in overtime winning the tournament and $6,000. It was rumored that after the event when Jonathan "elude" Gilbert had returned to his computer after being away for 3 days with his mIRC open he had more then 500 unanswered pms of congratulations.
After this event TEC was very much full of themselves and did not head the warning signs, they attended the usual PRE-CPL tournament at Lethal-Gamers and ended up placing 2nd behind Rival, whom they lost 2 games to in the tournament. Still feeling strong they went into CPL Summer 2003 with high expectations, but no one knew what was coming. In their first important match they had to wait for two hours for one of the opposing members to set up his keyboard which flustered the team and ultimately lead to their downfall. TEC was upset by a lower seeded team and knocked into the loser bracket and defeated again placing 25-32nd, after being heavily favored to place well in the tournament. The team was devastated and knew it would soon disbanded the only thing holding them together was the World Cyber Games US Qualifier, which was one month away which they had already qualified for where every contestant was promised a brand new computer.
Once attending the tournament after not practicing for a month the team won their first two matches handedly which set up their Semi Final match up against their rivals Team 3D. TEC held strong and got off to an early lead at one point was up 10-5, but after brilliant play from 3D they came back to win the match 13-10, sending TEC into the losers bracket where they would be defeated by team Rival ultimately placing 4th. What came next was as predicted, "Icesalmon", "Jaden", and "da_bears" all left the team for new ones. TEC was left to rebuild once again.
The leadership of TEC decided to steer away from "superstar" players and go with unknowns who would be more willing to work with things and build teamwork something the previous TEC lineup did not have. Because of that TEC picked up some up and coming talent: Weston "Dorsey" Dorsey, and Josh "W1ck3d" Hards, "spaz" would rejoin TEC but it would not last as he was eventually filled in by Kyle "wake" Wakefield. From this lineup they were able to build great teamwork which helped them go 16-3 at two Lethal Gamers events in Texas, the three loses were to one team: Forsaken.
CPL 2003 was set TEC's roster was:
Matt "Gouki" Gilbert
Jonathan "Elude" Gilbert
Weston "Dorsey" Dorsey
Josh "w1ck3d" Hards
Kyle "wake" Wakefield
No one believed in TEC anymore because they didn’t have any superstars, but this is where this team would show off its great teamwork but ultimately did not have enough skill to take down the top teams, they placed 13-16th, a mediocre finish after barely losing to Brazilian team g3x by a score of 11-13.
2004
Even though they did not place as high as they would have wished the team stuck around and continued to play together, something that hadn't happened with TEC before. They would win two more Texas LANs as well as a ESWC Texas Qualifier that invited them to the US Qualifier Finals in California. Unfortunately leading up to the LAN "Dorsey" and "w1ck3d" became less interested in Counter-Strike because of their playing of an MMORPG. In a move to keep "Dorsey" playing with TEC they moved to recruit his best friend and long time Texas player with immense talent Brian "Gosu" Longhofer. In the end it wasn’t enough to save the team and "Dorsey" as after a poor showing at the ESWC US Finals, where TEC placed 5th. Shortly after this event "Dorsey" and "w1ck3d" parted ways with TEC leaving the team with only 4 starters with only one month to the next CPL.
Despite never winning the huge tournaments, the TEC lineup consisting of "Gouki", "elude", "wakefield", "Dorsey", "W1ck3d" was one of the most consistent teams in TEC history, they went a combined 41-10 in the LAN Tournaments they competed in, winning 4 of the 5 Texas LAN Tournaments they entered continuing to show TEC's dominance over the Southern LAN scene.
TEC would look to long time friend of the clan Grant "Griff" Hall to fill the void left by "Dorsey" and "W1ck3d", they would take their new lineup that consisted of the following to Ever LAN 2004 and Summer CPL 2004:
Matt "Gouki" Gilbert
Jonathan "Elude" Gilbert
Kyle "wake" Wakefield
Brian "Gosu" Longhofer
Grant "Griff" Hall
TEC entered Ever LAN which was hosted in Colorado Springs, CO with very little practice with their fairly new members "Griff" and "Gosu" and it showed. They would start off the tournament in Group Play with a disappointing loss to nerve and would go onto face TEC's long time rival 3D later in the Group play needing to win to advance to bracket play. TEC would upset tournament favorites 3D on dust2 by a score of 13-10 allowing them to enter the bracket play. Unfortunately for TEC they were seeded last and went up against tournament favorites NoA. No one expected TEC to even come close to NoA but what followed was written into history. TEC playing NoA in a Best of 3 format came from behind in their first map to tie the score at 12-12, the match would eventually go onto 6 overtimes and be called the longest match in CS history taking up to 3 hours to play but TEC eventually won 28-24 in a huge upset. Solid play behind "elude", "Gouki", and "Gosu", helped them win this match. TEC would go on to lose the next two maps and be knocked out of the tournament erasing everything they had just accomplished.
Coming off random results of the Ever LAN tournament, beating 3D and NoA, TEC thought they would do well after a week of practice before CPL but unfortunately that would be canceled as Kyle "wake" Wakefield would have to go out of town for the entire week giving the team zero practice time. The results showed at CPL, TEC would go on to lose 2 straight matches to D-Skyline and EG and place 33-45th at CPL.
After yet another poor CPL performance, long time leader Matt "Gouki" Gilbert would take a break and give the leadership to his brother Jonathan "elude" Gilbert. After trying out the lesser known players TEC decided to give it another shot at the "superstars", after recruiting Lance "to0l" McCrary they were able to pick up Jason "moses" O'Toole and have Alex "Jaden" Moore return to the team.
TEC's new "superstar" lineup 2.0 was complete:
Jonathan "Elude" Gilbert
Brian "Gosu" Longhofer
Alex "Jaden" Moore
Lance "to0l" McCrary
Jason "moses" O'Toole
What followed was one of the best seasons in CAL-Invite history, TEC would go undefeated for 14 games which was unheard of during this time. They would eventually be upset in the Last week by United 5, but would win the last game to go on and finish 15-1. They didn’t perform as well in the playoffs beating EG 2-1 in a Best of 3 format in the first round then losing to Team 3D 0-2 in the second round. All this great play brought a lot of hype to this team, something they hadn't had in a very long time. But what most didn't know a month prior to CPL Brian "Gosu" Longhofer was unable to play which led to playing Matt "Gouki" Gilbert in his stead and eventually at CPL despite having used "Gosu" for the whole CAL season. Winter CPL 2004 would follow the same old TEC blue print, TEC would go on to lose in the second round to Begrip by a score of 14-16, and then get upset in the lower bracket by SK.Ger, placing TEC at another disappointing 17-24th.
2005
Following the poor play at Winter CPL 2004, most knew that some of the players would be unhappy and leave TEC, shortly after CPL TEC recruited Kevin "bzrk" Russel to replace "Gouki" who would go inactive for good this time. Shortly after that the team recruited Josh "derosa" Derosa to replace "moses" who would soon leave the team. Shortly after joining the team "Derosa" was removed because of differences between members which lead to the recruitment of Josh "Spyder" Restuccio. TEC's play would go downhill online and after losing a Texas LAN with a Ringer all the members decided to leave. This left Jonathan "elude" Gilbert with a tough decision, to either disband or rebuild completely, he decided to rebuild and while playing source.
Jonathan "Elude" Gilbert deciding to finally give his little brother Brad "bgilb" Gilbert a shot at the big leagues and rebuilt with Josh "Spyder" Restuccio. TEC merged with TAU.Source which consisted of many big name CoD players such as "Shield" and "afterlife".
TEC.Source Consisted of:
Jonathan "Elude" Gilbert
Brad "bgilb" Gilbert
Josh "Restuccio" Spyder
Troy "$hield" Mize
Drew "afterlife" Mize
Stephen "Whipboy" Tadlock
Derek "sanorex" Hargrave
The community hated TEC's decision and support for the team fell to an all time low. Despite this TEC continued on and tried to make Source as big as possible seeing as it was announced as the Premier game at the Summer 2005 CPL. TEC's introduction to online Source was fairly rough as they lost a lot of matches at first but once they got to know each other things started to click. Jonathan "Elude" Gilbert took over as in game leader for the first time in TEC's history and it really started to play out the way the team planned. After a successful week of boot camp prior to Summer CPL 2005, TEC entered a PRE-CPL tournament and was upset by a few teams bringing many doubts about the team. But once CPL started TEC played amazing, winning three straight matches in the upper bracket then losing in the semifinals to eventual tournament winner Powers Gaming, once dropping in the lower bracket TEC defeated Check-Six and German team dragonz after an exploit by the German's awarded TEC 4 rounds. TEC would go on to place 3rd and win $8,400 and won a big check, first time in the teams 5 year history.
The following season online for Source, TEC dominated everyone going undefeated and ended up ranked #1 before it withdrew, TEC had decided to go back to 1.6 after CPL's announcement there would be no source at Winter CPL 2005. TEC decided to pick up Drew "drew" Moorehead after his great performance with x6.source at Summer CPL 2005. After CS 1.6 was announced as the CPL World Tour game that would be played TEC decided it had no other choice then to come back to 1.6 and announced its return with this roster:
Jonathan "Elude" Gilbert
Brad "bgilb" Gilbert
Josh "Restuccio" Spyder
Troy "$hield" Mize
Drew "afterlife" Mize
Drew "drew" Moorehead
TEC's return to 1.6 Online was brutal as they got beat in almost every match and ended the CAL season with a record of 2-5, the worst in TEC history - most peopled were questioning why TEC got to rejoin CAL-invite and not have to go to a lower league first. A lot of roster changes went on, "bgilb" went inactive as well as "Shield" and "afterlife" this left room for "Jesuit" who only stayed for a month to finally be replaced by Robert "cram" Cramblock and was rejoined by his friend and past member Grant "Griff" Hall. TEC finally settled for its final roster which consisted of:
Jonathan "Elude" Gilbert
Josh "Restuccio" Spyder
Drew "drew" Moorehead
Grant "Griff" Hall
Robert "Cram" Cramblock
At Winter CPL 2005 TEC was a huge underdog, they won their first round match versus MnM which set up their second round match vs. 11th seeded Catch-Gamer, something familiar to TEC seeing as they have always played a good European team early in the tournament and usually lost, but not this time. TEC would rally and win in overtime versus the Europeans which marked the first time TEC had beat an European team in a major tournament, Catch would go on to place 7th despite losing to TEC. After beating Catch-Gamer and pulling one of the biggest upsets at the tournament TEC couldn’t convert and lost the next two matches to Lunatic-Hai who placed 2nd and Check-Six.
2006
After another disappointing CPL morale was low and once returning to online play it was evident as TEC dropped a few matches in a row by large numbers. Eventually most of the members decided to leave Jonathan "elude" Gilbert and Josh "Spyder" Restuccio and reform Pandemic, this had destroyed all of elude's desire to play especially since he no longer had any siblings to help rebuild with and finally TEC announced its retirement on January 11th, 2006.
TEC retired 5 years, 6 months, and 9 days old, at the time was the longest living CS team in the nation. TEC's record on LAN was 154-51-2 (.744) and online was 253-99-3 (.713) for an overall win loss record of 407-150-5.
