The Cyberathlete Amateur League, CAL, was created on March 6, 2001, when the Cyberathlete Professional League acquired the Domain of Games online league.

The primary goal of CAL is to be the premiere center for free online gaming tournaments worldwide. The league attracts both seasoned veterans of online competitive gaming, as well as casual gamers. CAL has been modeled after several highly popular sports organizations such as the NFL, NHL and NBA. CAL also provides seeding and ranking information to its parent organization, the Cyberathlete Professional League.

Beginning with a single Counter-Strike division, the Cyberathlete Amateur League has since grown to include over 25 different games, 60 divisions and 600,000 registered members in the US, Canada, Europe and South America. In CAL you will find many types of games from First Person Shooters, Real Time Strategy, 1v1 and team games. CAL supports PC games and a variety of console based games.

CAL was the first online league to form regular structured seasons, complete with pre-season, regular season and playoffs. In addition, CAL was the first league to introduce integrated team predictions, roster locks, score tickers, draft league, detailed standings page and game ID locks.

CAL is continually looking to the future and consistently demonstrates why it is the standard for all other online leagues in the world. With CAL having already expanded to include divisions for games in Europe and South America, CAL is looking forward to providing the best free online experience to players around the world.

Working with its strategic partners, CAL is continually improving the online experience for its members by offering free match servers, an Anti-Cheat System, a private high speed gaming network, and practice tools such as the CPL PlayLinc client.

Division definitions[1]

Open: CS Open gives new teams the experience of playing in structured league play other than ladder experience. Matches are once a week on Tuesdays and schedules are generated randomly.

Intermediate: CS Intermediate is for teams that have league experience, but need to gain more experience before the jump to CS Main. Matches are twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays.

Main: CS Main is a competitive league comprised of teams that have earned their way through the earlier leagues and have shown skill and longevity. Matches are played twice a week on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Premier: CS Premier is the division responsible for preparing teams for CS Invite. Matches for this division are played twice a week on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Invite: Invitations are extended to the best of the best CS teams out there, based on several factors including skill, longevity, LAN experience, and sportsmanship. As we feel teams have earned the spot in invite, we will contact them to extend an invitation into the league.
