The Championship Gaming Series (CGS) is an international ESports league based in the USA, though they have expanded in every continent. The league was founded in 2007 and is owned and operated by DirecTV with British Sky Broadcasting and STAR TV (Asia). The league is organized like the major North American sports leagues in that it will have a draft and teams allocated to cities. The series aired live on DirecTV's channel The 101 on July 9, 2007.

History

Whilst the foundations of the league began in 2006 with two invitational events, the Championship Gaming Series League did not kick off its first regular season until June 27th 2007 in Los Angeles. Carolina Core became the first team to record a victory in the league, winning 28-25 in the first ever franchise match in the league's history. The first game played was between Kat "Mystik" Gunn (Carolina Core) and Tanya "coolsvilla" Underwood (New York 3D), with Mystik winning the Dead or Alive part of the franchise match by 5 rounds to 3.

The CGS held qualifiers throughout 2007 in all regions, however the first qualifier was held as part of the Buy.com LAN tournament, March 30 through April 1, 2007 in Anaheim, CA.

They also held a further qualifier at The Bridge (a movie complex in Los Angeles) and finally a "combine" tournament for the top players from all over North America, which was the final chance to impress the leagues 6 general managers before the draft. The "combine" was held at the Fox Studios (Studio 16) on the Fox TV Studio complex in Los Angeles.

The first ever draft was held at the Playboy Mansion, Los Angeles on June 12th 2007. The first draft pick was Vanessa Arteaga, a 20 year old from Modesto, CA who was picked by the San Francisco Optx general manager Kat Hunter.

The North American region was the first region to hold qualifiers, a draft and a regular season, culminating in the North American playoffs and championship final in late July. Chicago Chimera defeated Carolina Core by 22-21 in the first ever championship final and both teams qualified for the World Championship Finals for 2007.

In September, further teams were admitted to the league from Rio, Mexico City, London, Birmingham, Berlin and Stockholm, with all of them qualifying for the World Championships.

In October, the Pan Asian Championship was held and 4 more teams qualified for the World Championships from Seoul, Sydney, Singapore and Wuhan. The other two teams from Dubai and Kuala Lumpur failed to make the World Finals.

There have been 51 official league franchise matches across all regions (pre-World Finals 2007). Chicago Chimera, London Mint, Singapore Sword, Berlin Allianz and Mexico City Furia were the winners of their respective regions in season 1 of the CGS and all qualified for the World Championship Finals.
